We are a community of monks who are drawn together by the call of Christ to follow him and his Gospel in a shared way of living the monastic path of prayer and discipline. When you become a novice monk, and later when you profess your monastic vows, there is always the question, “What do you seek?” It is a question about a desire that the Holy Spirit has put into your heart, and the desire comes down to this: to give yourself wholly to God. You probably aren’t able to put that desire in words, but you know that it impels you to seek the face of the One you knows loves you and calls to you in love. Saint Benedict puts it this way: What is more delightful than this voice of the Lord who calls to us?" (Rule of Saint Benedict, Prologue). So your life as a monk is a search for God’s face, even while you live in the embrace of God’s love.
