The Farewell Discourse: Abide & Go

Lent 2020
February 28–March 1, 2020
New Melleray Abbey

God is love and dispensing that love is His mission in creating the world and each of us. It is the work of Jesus Christ and of all who follow Him. And it is the Holy Spirit of Christ that empowers us to participate in that mission by spreading that love in our world today. In participating in that mission of love we are participating in the life of God.

We receive that love by abiding in Christ, as a branch abides in the vine, and going forth to bear the fruit in the lives of others. To participate in the life of God we are to “abide and go.”

This silent retreat will discuss what it means to “abide” and how we do it through the loyalty we pledged at baptism. Loyalty is the willing and thoroughgoing devotion we give to a cause that is worthy and unites us to others. It is the impetus that causes us to “Go” and carry on Christs’ mission of making the Father, Who is love, known to the world. Retreatants should read and ponder John, chapters 13-17 beforehand.

The retreat will begin with Vespers at 5:30 p.m. on Friday evening followed by supper and a beginning conference. Two conferences and a discussion period will be offered on Saturday and a summary reflection on Sunday morning. The retreat will conclude with a closing blessing on Sunday morning following the 9 a.m. Mass.

A free-will donation is asked; $170.00 is suggested. A special commuter rate of $85.00 is suggested for those who do not plan to stay overnight at the Abbey. The donation includes meals & materials. A $20 non-refundable deposit is requested. For more information contact Fr. Jonah at New Melleray Abbey: (563) 588-2319 ext 100, or visit the Abbey’s website at
