The Marital Journey:

Character Friendship and Commitment

The Vowed Life
August 16-18, 2019
New Melleray Abbey

This is a retreat for couples married in the Catholic Church. We often speak of the story of our lives as a journey. It’s a familiar experience. For Christian’s this story is often bound up with the journey of Jesus: In Him the spiritual life (living in the Spirit) and the moral life (the good we’re living for) are intimately connected.

Character is formed by a community and the story it lives out. Character is shown by the things we devote ourselves to for their own sake. Thus one’s character is a gift of the thing to which one devotes the self. A married couple’s highest calling is to help each other live the Christian story and develop character through friendship. As in any journey, they leave the comforts of home and embark toward a determined direction. Obstacles will b encountered. There must be mutual love of the destination for its own sake to make overcoming obstacles worthwhile. Preparing, adjusting, and staying on course to a clear destination requires Character, i.e., friendship, and commitment. We’ll talk about that.

The silent retreat will begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday with Vespers followed by supper. The first conference will be at 6:45. There will be two conferences on Saturday and a discussion in the evening. Saturday meals will be in silence with a spiritual reading. The retreat will conclude with a renewal of wedding vows following the 9 a.m. Mass on Sunday.

Registration is limited to 8 couples. A fee of $295 per couple includes room (linens and towels provided), meals, and materials. A $50 deposit is requested.
