Sept 14 – Cowls and Cloaks

Cistercian Cowls

Following a mild August and early September overnight temperatures dropping into the 40s we will resume wearing our cowls and cloaks at Vigils this morning. For the short term we will wear our cowls and cloaks for Vigils, Lauds, and Mass but not at evening Vespers.

Cistercian Cowlfrom Constitutions and Statutes of the Monks and Nuns of the Cistercian Order of the Strict Observance:

The characteristic Cistercian habit is the white cowl. Given at solemn profession it is a sign both of a monk’s consecration and of the unity of the whole Order.
