Friday in the Seventh Week of Ordinary Time
“A faithful friend is a sturdy shelter; he who finds one finds a treasure” (Sir. 6:14). Modern technology provides the means to “connect” and “like” many people, but not to enter into intimate and trusting relationships. We can “chat” but not communicate. We look at words flashing on a video screen but never see the other person’s eyes. We exchange words but not feelings or empathy. Friendship demands work, personal involvement, and risk. A friend is a haven in times of distress, a shelter when you are vulnerable, and a shield when you are exposed and defenseless. A friend is a person who shares your dreams and comforts you after a nightmare.
Never forget that God created Eve because it was not good for Adam to be alone (CF Gen. 2:18). God made us so that we would comfort and encourage each other. With the support of a friend, we can overcome any struggle. We need a friend when we find ourselves overwhelmed with grief. We need friendship when we are lost in darkness. Because it is not good to walk alone we always find a friend in times of need.
When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don’t be afraid of the dark…
Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain…
With hope in your heart
And you’ll never walk alone
(Oscar Hammerstein II, You’ll Never Walk Alone)
