Tuesday in the First Week of Easter

Scripture Readings: Acts 2:36-41; Jn 20:11-18

Writing about the Resurrection of Jesus, St. John describes the first encounter between the Church in glory, the risen Jesus, and the Church in tears represented by Mary Magdalene.  Four times St. John mentions her tears, until she recognizes Jesus.

But the People of God continues to weep because of persecution and all the sexual abuse scandals, and when deprived of the sacraments by the scourge of the coronavirus or the scarcity of priests in many places.

Today, some have stopped weeping, not because Christ has risen, but because they see so much sinfulness in the Church and have left it. But that is like abandoning a gymnasium because of those who are out-of-shape.  The Church, even in the monastery, is not the cause of so much sinfulness.  It is the cure.
