Tuesday in the Thirteenth Week of Ordinary Time

Matthew’s story about the violent storm at sea records Jesus’ response to the problem of suffering in our lives.

First, when Jesus seems asleep, indifferent or unaware of our plight, when all seems lost, have faith that he can help us. Even a little faith is enough.

Second, the story teaches us a powerful prayer for times of suffering: “Lord, save us.

Finally, the story teaches that when we are in the boat with Jesus and the apostles it will carry us safely to the other shore. To this day the long central part of our Church buildings, where the community gathers to pray, is called a nave, from the Latin word navis, which means a boat. Do you want to be saved?  Stay in the boat!
