Votive Mass for Christian Unity

We believe in the power of prayer, and what prayer could be more powerful than that of our Lord Jesus? But his prayer that all may be one has not yet been fulfilled. Christians are still divided. The reason cannot be because of anything that was lacking in his prayer. So, the reason must be due to some hardness of our hearts.

In our times we do not have to look very far to find a great hardness of heart in the human family. Over fifty million abortions have been committed in our country alone. I shudder at the thought of it. But its worse than that: the Guttmacher Institute, which is a spin-off from Planned Parenthood, reports an average of forty-two million abortions around the world every year, and in the last twenty-five years there have been over one billion abortions.1 That’s in the short span of a single generation. Never before in human history have so many people cooperated in their own way with killing the innocent, with intrinsic evil.

May we continue to pray and work for the unity that Christ so desires, and for the complete protection of the right to life of all the children that are created by our heavenly Father’s love.

Sisters and Brothers, I believe that there is no hardness of heart in any of you who are celebrating the Eucharist here this morning, but only a tender love for our Lord Jesus Christ.
