Wednesday in Holy Week
“The Lord God has given me a well-trained tongue, that I might know how to speak to the weary a word that will rouse them” (Is. 50:4). The Word became flesh to accompany us in our journey through life. The only-begotten Son of God became a companion to the weary and a healing remedy for the sick. Not only did he commiserate with those who suffer, out of love for us he took our suffering upon himself. By his wounds, we were healed (CF. Is. 53:5). Not only did he speak a word of comfort to a suffering world, but by enduring death on the cross he became a healing balm for all who suffer. During the Sacred Triduum, we walk with Christ on the path to Calvary recalling how he chose to walk with us as we make our pilgrim way to the Father’s house.
Because he was truly human, Jesus knew and experienced all the longings of the human heart. Because he carried within himself the Spirit of the Father, Jesus could speak with a passion no human being had ever known. Consumed by the fire of divine love, Jesus became an outcast, rejected by his people so that all of us might become beloved children of the Father. May our hearts overflow with gratitude for the love of Christ who freely laid down his life that we might have eternal life. As we ponder the Lord’s passion let us never forget that Jesus became the sacrificial lamb that was slaughtered because he loved us. I’ll leave you with an interesting thought from Simone Weil: “It is not my business to think about myself. My business is to think about God. It is for God to think about me.”
