Wednesday in the Thirty-Third Week of Ordinary Time

The wicked servant in today’s Gospel not only failed to collect interest on the gold coin entrusted to him, everything he had was taken away because he was a bad manager. This parable is not really about managing gold and silver. It’s a story about far greater treasures, grace and charity. They are entrusted to us by God in the seven sacraments.  Are we good managers of the sacraments?

Bad managers don’t care about being baptized and confirmed. They treat the Eucharist as ordinary bread, and commit sin without seeking Reconciliation.  They get married without an openness to protect life from the moment of conception.  They care nothing about Ordination and Anointing of the Sick.  Jesus tells us, when they come face to face with the great King they will lose even what they think is theirs, and be cut off from eternal life.

No earthly wealth can compare with the treasures entrusted to us in the seven sacraments.  May we be good managers, receiving them fervently, as often as we can so that grace and charity will grow in our hearts. Then one day we will hear the Lord say to us, “Well done good and faithful servant, come, share your master’s joy.”
